Life-Threatening Misdiagnosis at Center of ‘The Future of Diagnosis: Achieving Excellence and Equity’ Conference

The Future of Diagnosis: Achieving Excellence and Equity medical conference in Cleveland on October 9, 2023, as sponsored by the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine, will focus on the life-threatening misdiagnosis of CNN anchor Jake Tapper’s daughter. The multiday conference aims to spread awareness and education about misdiagnoses in hopes of reducing the risk of such medical malpractice in medical institutions, clinics, and hospitals nationwide.

Alice Tapper’s misdiagnosis case caught headlines partly because her father is a CNN anchor and partly because the case was so severe. In 2021, Alice was hospitalized with abdominal pain that was blamed on a viral infection. At her family’s insistence, though, an ultrasound revealed a damaged appendix that was causing sepsis due to an internal bacterial leak, requiring emergency surgery. The sepsis misdiagnosis could have become fatal within a few hours had the Tapper family not insisted that the medical practitioners use ultrasound for more information about her condition.

The medical conference will begin with a dissertation by Alice and Jake Tapper. Together, they will recount the experience, share their insight, and set the tone for the rest of the conference. Some estimates report nearly 80,000 deaths a year due to misdiagnoses; the Tapper family and The Future of Diagnosis conference organizers are on a mission to bring that amount down to zero.
